We had around 50+ people crammed into Oblong Books on Saturday night, it was a lot of fun. I read from the book and got some laughs. I love supporting local bookstores, they need our help! Oblong does a great job promoting events, making authors feel welcome and appreciated. Suzanna Hermans is the manager, and our daughter Ella also works there part-time. We love bookstores!!
The next event is at The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art on November 11th, where I will be in conversation with my editor at The New Yorker, Bob Mankoff. Bob is a cartoonist and he and I started at the magazine about the same time, and now he is my boss. He and I both teach cartoons and humor at the university level, and both have authored books on the subject. It should be an interesting night. When I asked him last week what he wanted to discuss that night, he said he wants to hash out the issue of men and women cartoonists. Are there differences, and if so, why, so what, etc…
The big event coming up on November 17th is the Launch Party, which will be held in NYC at The Society of Illustrators, 6:30. Here is the link. Not only will it be a party, funded by Chronicle Books, but I have organized a round table with four New Yorker cartoonists: Roz Chast (who wrote the wonderful introduction to my book), Drew Dernavich, Zach Kanin and Barbara Smaller. It is called, The Fun, Folly and Flexibility of Five New Yorker Cartoonists. Come by and drink some wine with us and laugh!
