Last night, I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of women and men, all of whom are leaders in one way or another, or in the case of the younger people, future leaders. This cartoon was the last slide in my presentation, which was full of cartoons of my own and others. I discussed how we have to help each other get over hurdles, particularly the cultural pressures and expectations placed on us by our society. Humor is a great way to get people to relax and ease into a serious subject, and this has become my trademark, it seems.
Why can’t funny and serious be partners? It makes perfect sense to me. Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, David Letterman do it beautifully–catch peoples attention with humor, then sneak the serious in. Now that I think of it, President Obama is good at combining the two, as well. Maybe we’re on to something.
Wonderful post, Liza. I wish I could have attended your talk. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you, Elena. Hope to see you soon!
