Parenting Gone Strange: The Time Cover

At about 9 am, I get an email from my editor at Forbes: “Want to do something on this?” she writes. I open the link and see the now infamous cover of time. My reply: “Yes!”

My immediate question was who is this woman, and why is she putting this boy through this? My next thought was:  oh, Time needs to sell magazines BAD. Get women riled up, make them compete with each other, start another supposed battle between different types of moms, and issues will fly off the shelf.

Not one to miss an opportunity to comment on such crazy stuff, I came up with a cartoon. Here it is on Forbes.

At first, I drew it this way:

Then my editor suggested that I mimic the Time cover, and I drew the final one you see at the top of the post.  I think it makes the point of the absurdity (and disturbing nature) of the cover better.  Sometimes I need a little push to go that extra whacky mile.  It shouldn’t be that difficult, it’s a whacky world.

Provocative selling indeed! I love your illustration 🙂

Before I knew about the Time cover, I came to this post, glanced at your cartoon, and thought, “OMG, Liza’s gone over the edge!” Then I read the blog, and realized, rather, that the WORLD itself had gone over the edge. How does one out-wacky that?! I’m wondering: is this that kid’s actual mom, and if not, how could his parents give their okay to him being plastered on every newsstand in the known universe? Disturbing indeed. Good cartoon though!
